5 New Horror Games...

The Forest
Inspired by films such as The Descent, this open-world thriller from fledgling studio SKS casts you as the survivor of an air crash, left to fend for yourself in the wilderness.
You must forage for food, build shelters, and battle to stay alive – because when darkness falls, something very nasty is lurking out in the woods.
The initial footage looks incredibly suspenseful and tense, while the SKS’s special effects experience on movies such as 300 and Tron: Legacy bodes well for the visual impact. Even more excitingly for those with nerves of steel, it will offer Oculus Rift support.

Asylum
The twisted minds behind point-and-click horror Asylum claim it’s set to be “one of the scariest games ever made”. And with Scratches creator Agustin Cordes helming the project and a complex plot in the offing, you wouldn’t bet against it.
You play a former patient of the Hanwell Mental Institute, returning to the rotting location to uncover its mysteries. There are more than 100 rooms to explore and developers Senscape are promising an emphasis on rich atmosphere.
It seems we’re not the only ones to be impressed, either. The game easily passed its funding target of $100,666 on Kickstarter.

Among The Sleep
Quite literally the thing of childhood nightmares, first-person chiller Among The Sleep is a highly intriguing and original creation from Norwegian outfit Krillbite Studio – and it hinges on an ingenious premise.
The game has you step into the diminutive shoes of an inquisitive two-year-old, as you leave your bedroom one night when strange goings-on begin to plague your surroundings.
Armed with a surreal, dream-like aesthetic, the tangible vulnerability of your character and the warped nature of the experience look set to be a thrilling combination. Expect heart-stopping scares and compelling problem-solving in equal measure.

Daylight
Like Asylum, this ghostly psychological experience from Zombie studios is set in an abandoned hospital. But while its location may be almost cliched, its approach is most definitely not.
Procedurally-generated so that the environmental layout and location of items change every time you play, the game takes a leaf out of Amnesia’s book by throwing combat out of the window and leaving you to prowl the pitch-black corridors unarmed.
Wielding only a mobile phone and other merciful light-giving items, it seems as though many a nervous soul will find their imaginations wandering wildly while playing this.

A Short Tale Of Solitude
What it lacks in graphical sharpness, Phobia Interactive’s distinctive mind-fuck more than makes up for with its offbeat atmosphere, creepy dolls and unsettling visual style. Or so it seems.
Rendered in stark black-and white, it casts you as an orphan boy sent to a bleak orphanage during World War I – where your only companions appear to be sinister sock-puppet creatures.
The fixed camera angles and contrived puzzles are classic survival-horror, while the Tim Burton-on-acid aesthetic looks set to play havoc with our mental faculties.
